RE: Buying is for real on hold now...

I've let a couple of off-topic posts stay only because they contained inferences to the buy/don't buy decision that may or may not help OP. I have deleted a couple that only discussed the economy and had nothing to do with the topic. If you're going to post to make a point about the economy and not referring to the original question, I will remove the post. Those types of posts belong in "Around the Campfire." Please stay on topic. Thanks for your cooperation. Lou

RE: Power Converter question.

That should do it for you, so long as it can handle the maximum DC load that you need on a given circuit. The highest rated circuit that I have in mine is 20Amps @ 12VDC and the distribution panel, fuse, wiring, and socket(I wired that particular circuit) accommodates this.

RE: Power Converter question.

Virtually all RV's use a converter to allow the 12 volt accessories to be run by 120 volts AC when plugged in to shore power or when the generator is running. This saves battery power for when you need it. The converter also recharges the coach battery. Many of the newer converters are able to charge the battery at the rated output of the converter. This is a real advantage if you use the generator to charge your battery when you are dry camping. Many of the older converters only trickle charge the battery at 3 or 4 amps. This could take a long time and lots of generator fuel. In addition to the above features the converter is also connected into the 12 volt distribution panel so that it supplies power to 12 volt accessories when it is on, or allows the battery to supply power when not plugged in. The distribution panel usually consist of a row of fuses marked for each circuit it runs. All DC power to the coach should come off of this panel. Hope this helps.

RE: To Be Armed or Not

And with this last post, unless someone comes up with a real good reason why, I'm thinking the topic has played out. That said, THANK YOU ALL!!! for staying on topic and being civil with each other. Lou

RE: What I Did This Past Month - Bariatric Surgery

Some folks have been asking for an update and I feel that it's time to share my progress with you. But first... The before. This is a picture of me with my son-in-law's father http://mysite.verizon.net/res1amdv/DSC00029a.jpg on Father's Day (June 12, 2008). I had just started the journey 3 months before and had lost about 10 pounds at that point from my highest weight. And here I am as of today http://mysite.verizon.net/res1amdv/DSC00098a.jpg. As of yesterday, I've reached just under the half-way point to my goal of 200 lbs. by my birthday (June 30, 2009). http://tickers.tickerfactory.com/ezt/t/wGePG0F/weight.png So, now you have it and I feel great!

RE: California RV Endorsement

Correct. We are only talking California licensing here. Your state may have a similar requirement/endorsement/restriction. "Also, maybe I missed something, it happens, but what if fifth wheel is over 15,000?" Restriction 41 is for California Class C licenses with an endorsement to be able to tow between 10,001 and 15,000 lbs. GVWR. That's what I have on my CA driver license. The only thing you need is a valid Class C license and take the commercial written test. No road test, no medical requirement. You may need to take a vision test. 15,001 lbs and up GVWR requires a Non-commercial Class A license (which requires a commercial driving road-test in addition to the written test). Not all the DMVs are set up for the road test, so the DMV web site contains the list of locations that provide road tests. When making the appointment, state that this is for a non-commercial Class A license using an Truck/RV combination in excess of 15,001 lbs GVWR. Hope this helps.

RE: Camper fire, what happened here?

From the article: “I haven’t a clue what happened,” Classon said. “I was fueling when it happened. I must have had maybe five or six gallons in it when it happened. Fire started in back of the camper near the area of the propane heater.” “There was diesel pouring out all over because he left the pump running,” Brahce said. “I was in my car when fire spread from his camper to the ground, so I just got out and ran.” “We know the fire came out of the back of the camper and spread rapidly to the canopy over the gas pump,” Chief Ebert said. Draw your own conclusions from these eye-witness statements.

RE: 8000 Watt Generator

With my generator enclosed in a ventilated soundbox, I was able to achieve a reasonable (52dB at 20 feet) level. My fellow mods Firedude and Rodger can attest to this. You can see details and finished version of the project in the Tech Issues section of the forum (Chinese Generators thread). Since the the pictures were taken, I relocated the muffler outside of the box, lowering the internal operating temperature even further with no sound increase. Granted that my set up is not "portable" in any way (as yours would not be); in fact it comes closer to configuration to that of the Onan Juicebox which comes in at: 68 dB at 10 feet (3 meters) and when I talked to an Onan rep at "The Rally" in July 2007, we measured it out at 62 dB at 21 feet (7 meters). The same thread may provide you with ideas on enclosing your generator to limit the amount of sound being carried. Hope this helps.
